Housing in Queensland

The ABS Census 2021 found there were almost 2 million private dwellings in Queensland on census night.
74.8% of people lived in separate houses rather than units.

Approximately a third each were owned outright, owned with a mortgage and rented.

*Rented excludes dwellings being occupied rent-free. Other tenure type or not stated make up remaining 3.4%

A Housing Continuum

The Housing Continuum concept defines the different types of housing and housing support required
for people including in Queensland.

It shows types of housing options needed, from crisis accommodation, social housing, affordable and private rental housing, shared equity and home ownership options.

The housing continuum has been seen as a linear concept, with home ownership seen as a goal to which everyone should aim for. However, home ownership is not a realistic outcome for everyone.
